But as a rule, down becomes more dense or clumps after being wet. It's no longer distributed tightly within the lining of the garment, becoming thinner and less warming.

Reasons why lumps form in a down jacket after washing
A down jacket will keep you warm as long as the filling is evenly distributed throughout the garment, but unfortunately, down is very susceptible to mechanical stress. Therefore, it's important to understand why down clumps; this happens not only after washing.
If your down jacket or coat does not contain a special water-repellent layer, even rain can damage it and cause the down to clump.
– The filling also absorbs sweat well, so to prevent the fluff from clumping, the product still needs to be washed.
– You can’t fold a down jacket and store it in this rolled-up form, the fluff will become crumpled and gather into lumps.
Attention: Do not dry the down jacket with a hairdryer or place it on a radiator; it is preferable to dry it only under natural conditions.

How to wash a down jacket so that the fluff doesn't clump?
When a down jacket gets wet during washing, the filling also gets wet, causing the down to clump together. Typically, these heavy clumps tend to gather at the edges of the lining seams, leaving large empty spaces in the middle. Such a down jacket will not provide any warmth after drying. Therefore, it's important to wash your down jacket properly to prevent the down from clumping.
– Carefully look at the manufacturer’s recommendations; the tags usually indicate whether the item can be washed or not.
– Use special detergents for down jackets when washing.
– It’s better to reduce the number of revolutions to 800.
– You cannot wash a down jacket if fluff is coming out of the lining.
– Camel wool shrinks very quickly, while down jackets filled with down or holofiber are the easiest to wash.
– You can wash your down jacket with three tennis balls at a temperature no higher than 40°C and a spin cycle no higher than 400 rpm. The balls will prevent the down from clumping. Rinse it several times after washing.
Important: If you still have doubts about washing your down jacket at home or if your item cannot be washed, it is best to take it to a dry cleaner.
Ways to break down fluff at home
Let's figure out what to do if the fluff has clumped after washing.
Method one: fluff up the down jacket with tennis balls. Take a dry down jacket, set the washing machine to spin mode, and set the speed to no more than 400 rpm. Add three or four tennis balls to the jacket and run the washer. If the down is very matted, it's worth washing it several times. Then remove the jacket from the drum and shake it vigorously in all directions, fluffing it like a pillow.
Important: Make sure that the down jacket is completely dry, even if it is slightly damp – this method will not help.
The second method relies on temperature differences. Shake the down jacket vigorously, hang it on a hanger, and take it out into the cold, such as a balcony. After it freezes, return it to a warm room and warm it to room temperature. Repeat this process several times until the down jacket regains its volume. Finally, shake it vigorously again to distribute the down.
Method three. Using a vacuum cleaner. Take a vacuum bag and suck out the air with the vacuum cleaner, then use the vacuum cleaner to fill the bag. Again, repeat this process several times, then shake the down jacket thoroughly.
The quarter method. Mechanically, it's best to use a carpet beater, but a rolling pin can be used instead. Lay the rug on a hard, flat surface and beat along its entire length, breaking up any clumps. Don't overdo it, as this can damage the rug.
Method 5. Using a steam iron or steamer. This method is best used in conjunction with the previous one. Tap and shake the down jacket thoroughly, then iron the lining side with steam from the iron or steamer.
Method 6. Using a hairdryer. This method is only effective if your down jacket is still damp. Turn the jacket inside out and finish drying it with a hairdryer from the lining side, aiming the hairdryer upwards. This method not only dries the down but also inflates it from the directed airflow, preventing it from clumping. Periodically fluff the down jacket thoroughly while drying.
Important: Do not dry with hot air from a hairdryer, as the fluff will become brittle. Choose a cool or lukewarm setting.
