What to do if your washing machine freezes

The car fell asleepA modern automatic washing machine requires proper care and correct operation.

Sometimes equipment needs repair, and if you detect the problem at an early stage, you can avoid major repairs.

The most unpleasant and unpredictable breakdown in household appliances is freezing.

No system errors are displayed and the self-diagnosis function cannot be launched, so you have to rely on advice and logic.

What to do if the machine freezes?

So, the washing machine is frozen, what should I do?

If this situation occurs during operation, then it's almost impossible to influence it from the outside. This doesn't apply to cases where the cause lies not in a breakdown, but in improper operation.

Operate correctly

Here are some examples:

  1. When the machine is overloaded.
In this case, the equipment will stop at the beginning of the running program based on a signal from the weight sensor.
  2. How to load a washing machine correctlyWhen the laundry load is unbalanced.
The freeze will occur when the spin mode starts.
What does imbalance mean? How does it affect the washing machine's freezing during a cycle?
This occurs when laundry bunches up into a ball, which can create excessive vibration during the spin cycle. This can be resolved by spreading the laundry evenly throughout the drum.
  3. If the mode without draining and spinning is set.
    This situation occurs during rinsing.
You should check your program; it may not include draining and spinning. This is especially common with delicate and easily wrinkled fabrics.
In this case, you can turn on the drain forcibly and take out the laundry.

If none of the above applies to your problem, then most likely there is a breakdown.

How to identify the cause yourself?

How can I determine why my washing machine is freezing and whether it is freezing at all?

This can be easily done by monitoring the wash cycle. Note the time the program is started for and how long it takes. If there's a difference, the machine is stalling.

The main reasons why a washing machine freezes

Sometimes the washing machine spins twice and freezes, or sits for a long time at 11 minutes, or just sits for as long as it wants. Why does this happen?

  1. The heating element is coated, the filter is clogged, and the module needs to be reprogrammed.A significant amount of time is spent heating water due to heavy deposits on the heating element or its failure. The heating element will need to be replaced.
  2. Time is lost due to a software module failure. In this case, a firmware update or replacement will be required.
  3. Water can get stuck in the machine and not drain properly due to a clog. There's a filter at the bottom of the machine, hidden behind a small door. Open it and inspect it; cleaning may be necessary.
  4. Constant water drainage is caused by a faulty water level sensor (pressure switch), which, for whatever reason, is unable to detect the presence or amount of water in the drum. To resolve this issue, the water level sensor will need to be replaced.
  5. At the start of a wash cycle, the machine may stop due to a faulty motor, which deprives it of rotational power. The motor will need to be replaced. This usually occurs when water gets on the part and it "burns out." Overload can cause the belt to break. Even if the motor is working properly, it will still not rotate, causing the drum to stop.
  6. Foreign objects getting into the drum can cause it to stop moving completely. It can even jam. Sometimes it can even become warped.
  7. Misalignment occurs when a bearing fails or the mounting hardware is unbalanced. To check if this is the cause and why the washing machine is stuck, try turning the drum by hand, after unplugging it.

If you have to put in a lot of effort to spin the drum, then something is definitely stuck between the tank and the drum.

You will need the help of a specialist who can conduct diagnostics and remove foreign objects, as well as replace the bearing if necessary.

Freezing immediately after turning on

If the problem occurs immediately after turning on the machine, the cause may be:

  • electronics,
  • user error,
  • in the hatch door locking device.

Typically, an error code should appear on the display if the machine model provides for it.

Machine error panelsIt's easy to check for a problem with the lock: if the door opens after starting the washing mode, then the cause has been found.

User error may result in the drum being overloaded, the washing program being selected incorrectly, or the spin and drain cancel button being pressed accidentally.

If the control unit is faulty, you'll need to access the washing machine to confirm the problem. To do this, remove the detergent drawer from the de-energized machine and unscrew the screws holding the control panel. This will expose the control unit and measure the contact resistance with a voltmeter.

If your LG washing machine freezes at the start of a wash cycle, you need to do the same.

The washing machine freezes during washing.

The causes of this malfunction differ from the previous ones. In this case, the events preceding the freeze are of great importance.

If, after starting a wash cycle, the machine makes a hissing or crackling noise followed by a pause, the problem is most likely with the valve or water supply. It may not have filled with water.

Intake valve problems

If the machine does fill with water, and then starts hissing and crackling, while the drum does not rotate at all, the problem may be in the motor.

If there is water, the drum is working, washing, but the washing machine gets stuck on the drain or rinse cycle, then the cause is most likely a blockage or a faulty pump.

How to make the machine wake up?

Step-by-step instructions for draining water through a washing machine filterIf the washing machine freezes, you can try unplugging it from the power supply and then plugging it back in.

If this doesn't help and there's still water in the machine, you'll need to drain the drum to get the laundry out. It's easy to do.

  1. At the bottom of the machine is the drain filter, which we mentioned earlier. Open the cover and you'll see a large plug and a small hose with a plug at the end.
  2. We lower it into a basin, having first unscrewed the cap, and drain the water.
  3. Now you can safely open the hatch and take out the laundry.

It should be remembered that the hatch door lock will not open immediately, but after a few seconds.

  1. RUSLAN

Hello. Please help. My Siemens washing machine washes normally. It switches to rinse mode (the mode light indicates this). It draws water for the rinse cycle once, rinses. Then it draws water for the rinse cycle, rinses a second time, and stops with water (immediately after the spin mode light comes on). The display doesn't show an error code, only three lines like "-". Rinse and spin modes work fine. I also noticed the timer is running out on the display.

Hello. My Bosch Series 6 3D Washing machine, when turned on, the add laundry icon on the indicator light blinks, and the machine doesn't work. What can I do?

Hello, my LG washing machine (5 kg) doesn't turn off at the end of the wash cycle and freezes for 13 minutes. What should I do?

    Good afternoon
What if my Bosch Maxx 4 washing machine (from the 2000s) fills very slowly during the first rinse after the wash cycle (only into the right section of the drawer) and then stops and the middle light flashes? However, when selecting the rinse mode manually, and even when starting the wash cycle, water fills well.
