Why is my laundry hot after washing? My washing machine is overheating - Causes + Video

The washing machine is overheating the water
The laundry is hot after washing

We often discover that our washing machine is overheating based on minor signs. It seems like we set the "Delicates" cycle to 40°C, but suddenly the clothes started to fade! Or maybe we set the wash cycle to the "Wool" cycle, which typically maintains a temperature of 30°C, and when we took our favorite sweater out of the drum, it had shrunk so much that now it's only fit for a teddy bear...

However, there are more "pronounced" cases—when the washing machine literally boils over. In this situation, clouds of steam rise from under the top lid of the appliance, and heat can be felt from the walls.

The laundry boils and stays hot

And even when your washing machine doesn't boil your laundry, but simply shifts the temperature by 10-20 degrees, the situation is, isn't it, more than unpleasant. Washing synthetics, delicate fabrics, and wool is simply impossible in this situation!

What should you do when you have determined that your “helper” is overheating the water?

  1. First, turn off the washing machine. If the machine has finished washing and you notice the problem directly in the damaged items, simply unplug the power cord. If you notice this during the wash cycle, i.e., if you notice heat radiating from the door, it's best to stop the wash cycle.
  2. Then try activating the drain controller to drain the hot water from the washing machine, and then unplug the appliance. If the machine doesn't respond—the control module may have malfunctioned due to overheating—unplug the washing machine and let it cool down.

It's important to remember that the washing machine contains a fairly large volume of water—approximately 30 liters—and it takes several hours for it to cool! Once cool, you can drain the water using the drain filter, which is located in a small hatch at the bottom of the machine, and remove the laundry.

Once the washing machine is empty and unplugged, it's time to address the issue:

Breaking Solution to the problem Cost of repair services
Damage to the thermistor (temperature sensor in the newest washing machines with electronic control) The most common cause of overheating in washing machines with electronic control is inaccurate operation of the thermistor, the sensor that detects the water temperature. When the water in the machine reaches the set temperature, the thermistor "signals" this information to the control board, which, in turn, transmits a command to the heating element relay to turn off the heating. Sometimes, the thermistor malfunctions due to scale buildup, erroneously measuring the temperature. In this case, cleaning the machine with an anti-scale product may suffice. However, in the vast majority of cases, the thermistor "burns out," i.e., fails completely. In this case, the thermistor must be replaced. From 1300 rub.
Heating element relay malfunction (in washing machines with electronic control) When the water reaches the set temperature, the thermistor signals the control board, which then sends information to the heating element relay, which turns off the heating. If the heating element relay fails to activate, the heating element fails to respond to the signal and continues to operate, causing the water to overheat and boil. This heating continues throughout the entire cycle: if the wash cycle is not stopped in time, the water will continue to heat up during the rinse cycle.

In this case, the relay needs to be replaced.

The thermostat (temperature sensor in washing machines with electromechanical regulation) is faulty. In older washing machines with electromechanical controls, the thermostat combines two functions: it directly senses the water temperature and automatically turns off the heating element. If the thermostat fails, the function of turning the heating element on or off disappears, and the water may either overheat or not heat up at all.

In this case, it is necessary to replace the thermostat.

The electronic module (in washing machines with electronic coordination) or the programmer (in models with electromechanical regulation) is faulty. A common cause of water overheating is a faulty control board. The washing machine's "brain center" fails to signal the heating element to turn off, resulting in the water boiling. Alternatively, the board incorrectly interprets the information received from the thermostat and assumes the water hasn't yet reached the desired temperature. As a result, the water is overheated by 10, 20, or 30°C.

In this case, you will need to reflash or replace the control board.
