Reasons for washing machine breakdown: common faults

What can break in a washing machine?Modern automatic washing machines present themselves as reliable, functional, and durable designs.

Unless, of course, it has various types of faults and is not used properly by the owner.
But as the saying goes, “Nothing lasts forever,” because even the coolest and most expensive automatic machines can break down. Let's look at some common problems and how to fix them.

Main breakdowns and their causes

The machine does not turn on

A more common problem is when the machine won't turn on. Here's what to do:

  • the machine cannot be startedMake sure your machine is plugged into the power outlet.
  • Make sure there's power in the outlet. To check the voltage, plug another electrical appliance into it or test it with a voltage tester.
  • Check that the loading door is closed tightly. To check, first open it and then close it; you'll hear a clicking sound.

The door doesn't open

A related problem may be that the door won't open. The problem could be mechanical, such as a broken handle.

The handle broke

To fix this problem, we will take several steps:

  1. The washing machine door handle brokeYou need to remove the top cover of the washing machine, and to do this you need to unscrew the fastening screws in advance.
  2. Tilt the body back so that the tank moves slightly away from the front of the machine.
  3. Place your hand inside the structure from above and unlock the latch yourself.

You may need to replace the door handle itself. To do this, unscrew the screws around the door perimeter and remove the top half (front). Next, remove the broken (old) handle and replace it with a new one, then reverse the process.

Tip: To open the door in an emergency, use the orange cable located on the bottom of the car.

Many washing machine models are equipped with a special "cable" that releases the door in an emergency. It's located under the lower front panel. The cable is often orange. Pull the cable (carefully), and the door will open.

Blockage due to water

The washing machine door may also close due to water in it. Washing machines have a safety feature that automatically closes the door to prevent flooding. This action is considered a "basic consideration" by the technology.

Software problems

There is such a problem as a non-working program.

If after loading the laundry and trying to start the program nothing happens, the following options are possible:

  • non-working buttons on the washing machineThe machine is disconnected from the power supply;
  • Problem with power cord;
  • The network filter is out of order;
  • Problems with the door lock;
  • Power supply circuit problems;
  • Network button not working.

Further effective steps to address these issues:

  1. You should press the machine's power button or turn the program selection knob.
  2. Make sure,
    – that the machine is plugged into the socket;
    – that there is voltage in the socket;
    - that the power cord is not damaged;
    - that the plug of the cord is not damaged.
  3. Unscrew the mounting screws located on the back side of the machine and remove the cover.
    Press and check (ring) the power button with a tester.
    If there is no contact or it disappears, the button needs to be replaced.

Additional steps to troubleshoot your washing machine:

  1. Check the input filter with a tester. The filter is located at the top of the unit, near the power cord.
  2. Also, if the indicator lights start to illuminate when selecting a wash program, there may be a problem with the door lock. If the door lock does not lock when power is applied, the door lock needs to be replaced.
  3. You need to check the lock blocker for a signal.
    This requires checking the integrity of the wires and cables, checking the control board for defects, and measuring the voltage in all elements of the circuit.
    Failed components must be replaced.
  4. You may have detected a fault in the central microcircuit. In this case, the control board will need to be replaced or reprogrammed.
    It is better to deal with this type of problem with the help of a specialist.

Water is not being collected

The problem may also be that the machine isn't filling with water. Potential issues and solutions are described below.

  • The machine does not fill with water.The powder compartment does not receive a certain amount of water or does not receive enough.
    The problem can be easily solved – simply disconnect the inlet hose and remove the filter mesh, then rinse it thoroughly.
  • Continuous drainage of water.
    This problem may be caused by improperly connected water inlet and outlet hoses. The hose needs to be inspected and any issues identified should be addressed.
  • The electromagnetic valve is worn out.
    Over time, the membrane of this element wears out, and its flow performance deteriorates. The solution is to replace the valve.
  • The water level sensor is not working.
    The sensor is located slightly above the machine's drum. Disconnect the pressure hose and blow it out. Simply blow into it, and if you hear clicking sounds, the sensor is working. If not, it needs to be replaced.

No water heating

The problem may also be that the water in the machine does not heat up.

The machine does not heat water.If your washing machine isn't heating up, it's safe to assume the heating element is faulty. If this is the cause of your washing machine's failure, don't rush into repairs right away. It's best to perform a few diagnostic steps first:

  • The tank should be checked for water;
  • Make sure that the correct washing program is selected, which involves heating the water to more than 40 degrees;
  • Make sure that the circuit breakers do not trip when the washing machine is turned on;

After turning on the machine and the washing program itself, you need to wait 10 to 15 minutes, after which you should check the glass of the loading door by touch to make sure the glass is at the right temperature.

If the glass heats up, then the heating element is not damaged and everything is working properly. If not, then we proceed to the next steps.

Checking the heating element

This heating element is located at the bottom of the tank. Use a tester to determine the resistance value for an open circuit.

If the element is faulty, you need to contact the service center to request a replacement. It's possible that the problem is caused by scale buildup on the heating element.

It can be eliminated using special products that are sold in hardware stores.

Checking the Thermostat

Use a tester to measure the resistance. Replace faulty sensors with identical components.

Checking voltage

Using a tester, measure the voltage supplied to the heating element.

The drum does not rotate

The problem could be with the drive belt, or more specifically, its integrity—it could be stretched or simply damaged. In this case, only knowledge of radio engineering (if you have it) will help you solve the problem. If not, we advise you not to take any risks and immediately contact a qualified service center.

Problems with spinning

Wet laundry from the washing machine after spinningIf your washing machine has this type of breakdown, there is basically nothing to worry about, as fixing this type of malfunction is not difficult.

During the spin cycle, the machine's drum, not the tub, rotates. The laundry is first distributed, then the drum speed increases. At this point, you can determine which of these stages is causing the problem.

Using the method of elimination, we will go through everything step by step, from the simplest and most common to the more obvious and complex.

Stopping the washing machine after rinsing

The laundry you remove from the drum is still wet. The filter needs cleaning, as debris trapped there impairs drainage and prevents the machine from spinning the laundry completely.

The car does not reach a certain speed.

The most common cause is worn-out brushes. You may also notice unusual noises or a burning smell during the wash cycle. If the brush extension is less than 0.7 cm, they need to be replaced. Simply disconnect the wire, pull out the contact, and remove the brushes, making note of the direction of the graphite contacts.

The problem is in the broken engine tachometer.

If the set speed does not correspond to the set program, the washing machine motor can only operate at minimum or maximum speed.

The tachometer monitors and controls the rotor's rotation speed. During rotation, an alternating voltage appears at the coil terminals.

The machine's system uses a dedicated circuit board to compare the frequency, which also controls the drum rotation. There's an easy solution: simply tighten the screws that secure the sensor.

There is no water drainage. Details

The washing machine can hold water in the tank. due to clogged pipes.

To solve this problem, simply disconnect the machine's drain hose from the sewer and lower it into a location that suits your needs.

dirty water doesn't drain from the washing machineWe recommend using a bath or toilet.

The hose will be cleared as soon as you turn on the spin or forced pumping.

The drainage of water is also affected by filter, the condition of which must be checked periodically. The filter is located at the bottom of the machine, on the front.

It is located on the left or right side, under the decorative panel (which is easily removed), or under the hatch cover.

To open the hatch, insert any flat object of suitable width (a screwdriver works well). The panel can be secured with latches or screws. Modern automatic washing machines have a thin drain hose that can be pulled out and lowered into a container.

What can be found in the filter?Once you've located the filter's mounting location, you should also unscrew it. There's a special bulge in the center of the filter that allows you to grasp it by hand. In some cases, the filter won't budge.

If this is your case, use pliers and carefully unscrew the filter counterclockwise. To avoid damaging or scratching the filter, you can wrap it in a cloth first. Once unscrewed, thoroughly clean the filter of any dirt or foreign objects.

If after these steps the water does not flow out of the machine, it is necessary Checking the tank and pump for clogging, or more precisely, their connections. If problems are detected, clean the hose. The clamps can be easily removed with a screwdriver and pliers.

You need to make sure it's working properly pumpTo do this, turn on the spin cycle and watch the pump blades, which should rotate freely.

pump impeller repair

If they do not rotate, or rotate slowly, unplug the machine and inspect the hole where the blades are located for any kind of dirt or malfunctions.

Prevention

To ensure your washing machine serves you for a long time, you only need to know one preventative recommendation: simply follow the rules for handling the machine.

Don't overload it, use it carefully.

Clean the filters periodically (we recommend using special powders) and occasionally contact a service center for preventative maintenance.
