DIY Samsung Washing Machine Repair: Types of Malfunctions + Video

Disassembled washing machineKorean manufacturers produce high-quality appliances, including washing machines.

Typically, if a company manufactures a variety of household appliances, rather than just one specific type, the product is considered rather mediocre. This is not the case with the Samsung brand.

The diversified product is in high demand among buyers, regardless of whether it is household appliances or a telephone.

The company maintains its image by devoting all its energy and expertise to production. But, like any manufacturer, high-quality Samsung equipment breaks down, too. We can't always get it repaired: sometimes we don't have the money, sometimes we don't have the time.

To avoid spending money on repairs at a service center, it's best to perform simple repairs yourself. Today, we'll show you how to repair a Samsung washing machine yourself.

Most often, washing machines break down heating elements, filler valves, get damaged drive belts.

How to replace a drive belt

  1. Open the back panel of the device.
  2. To remove the belt, pull it halfway between the pulley and the engine with one hand. Take a Phillips-head screwdriver and insert it into the pulley groove while holding the belt with your other hand.
  3. Move the screwdriver along the groove, freeing up larger sections of the belt and pulling it out of the groove.Checking the washing machine drive belt
  4. Once the belt is removed, carefully inspect it from all sides for any wear or damage. If any, replace it with a new one.
  5. Now it needs to be installed on the pulley. Place the inner part of the belt against its groove. To ensure the drive belt is securely in place and will slide on quickly, rotate the pulley slightly with your other hand.

DIY Samsung washing machine pump repair

Often found in Samsung household appliances the drain pump is not workingTechnicians call the pump of a washing machine the heart of the machine. It draws water into the drum and removes the used liquid.

The pump consists of several parts:

  1. electric motor;
  2. shaft;
  3. impeller (blade wheel);
  4. snail to which a branch pipe and drain hose are connected.

Signs of pump failure:

  • The laundry is not rinsed or the rinse does not work at all.
  • The car stops.
  • The spin cycle does not turn on.
  • The water does not drain or drains for a very long time.
  • The washing powder is not completely washed away by water when it is collected, but remains in a small amount in the tray.Replacing or repairing the washing machine pump

First of all, you need to determine whether the pump is the cause of the washing machine breakdown or not.

Listen to the pump. If it hums, makes noise when trying to turn on, doesn't fill with water, or doesn't make any sounds, the pump is broken.

Repairing a Samsung washing machine pump yourself is carried out in the following order:

  • Unscrew the drain filter and clean it. The pump impeller may be jammed due to debris.
  • If cleaning the filter doesn't help, and water still isn't filling the machine, the drain hose may be clogged. Remove it and rinse it. Then replace it and run a test wash. If the pump continues to malfunction, continue troubleshooting.Removing the washing machine pump
  • Unscrew the filter and look into the holes using a flashlight. Use your fingers to feel the pump impeller and try to turn it. If it's difficult to turn, feel for any obstructions, such as threads or hair, and remove them.
  • If the pump impeller rotates freely, disassemble the washing machine further to check for pump failure. Pump malfunctions are usually caused by a clogged pump.

Therefore, the drain pump and pipe need to be thoroughly cleaned. But to clear the blockage, they need to be removed.

To do this, you need to perform the following operations:

  1. remove the container;
  2. lay the machine on its side;Washing machine pump repair
  3. unscrew the bottom protection;
  4. Remove the drain pump and hose. Place an absorbent cloth under the pump, as some water will spill out when you remove it.
  5. disconnect the clamp to release the pipe;
  6. unplug the plug from the drain pump sensor;
  7. To remove the pump, loosen the clamp and unscrew the fasteners.
  8. remove the drain pump, turn on the hot water tap and place a hose under it to flush out any debris and clear the passage for water;
  9. secure the bottom;
  10. Put the washing machine back and check if it works.

There may be different reasons for pump failure. The repair of a Samsung washing machine drain pump depends on the cause of the breakdown.Washing machine pumps

  • If a clog isn't the issue, disassemble the pump: unscrew the volute. Take a photo of how the electric motor is connected to it so you can reassemble it correctly. If the problem is caused by the casing, which has become deformed from the hot water and the impeller blades are catching on it, trim each blade with a knife by no more than 1 mm. Otherwise, the washing machine's performance will be significantly reduced.
  • The impeller can also be the cause of pump failure. It can simply come off the shaft, making a humming noise but not pumping any water. In this case, the impeller needs to be replaced.
  • Inspect all rubber seals. If any are cracked, worn, or torn, replace them.
  • Sometimes the pulley fails. It can also be replaced.

Pump parts are inexpensive, but new ones are needed. Reassemble the pump and washing machine. Run a test wash. The pump is repaired.

Repair of the inlet valve

The inlet valve fails much less frequently, but when it does, it's usually because the rubber seal loses its ability to retain water because it dries out and cracks. It needs to be replaced.

Open the top cover of the washing machine.The barrel-shaped element connected to the inlet hose is the inlet valve.Clogged washing machine inlet valve

Loosen the clamp, disconnect the sensor wire, and unscrew the filler valve. Inspect the rubber seals for cracks. If they are torn, replace them with new ones.

Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the sensor wire. If everything is OK, reinstall the part.

DIY heating element repair

The Samsung washing machine's heating element is located under the front panel. To repair it, follow these steps:

  • First remove the bottom bar of the front wall;
  • remove the container; inside the niche where it was located there are fasteners that you will unscrew;
  • remove the top cover;
  • then use a screwdriver to unscrew all the screws on the control panel and remove it;
  • carefully pull out the cuff clamp by prying it with a screwdriver and removing the fasteners holding the hatch;
  • Unscrew all the bolts on the front wall and remove it;Washing machine repair
  • Check the heating element contacts by connecting the multimeter probes to them. If there are no faults, disconnect the fastener between the heating element contacts;
  • Remove the heating element. Heating elements usually fail due to scale buildup from hard water. Replace the heating element with a different one;
  • put the parts back in place in reverse order.

DIY Samsung washing machine module repair

The control board is the most important component in a modern washing machine. It coordinates the operation of all its electronic components.

Any malfunction of the board will lead to improper operation of the washing machine, and it may not work at all.

Signs that indicate a board failure:

  1. The machine fills with water and drains it immediately.
  2. Turns on and doesn't turn off.
  3. The drum rotates slowly or at maximum speed.
  4. Programs may not work correctly.The washing machine does not turn on
  5. The water does not heat up or overheats.
  6. An error message appears on the control panel display. If the device has no display, the lights start flashing.
  7. The spin cycle is not activated.

Reasons for board failure

Korean-made electronic circuit boards are reliable and can last for many years. But they can also fail. There are several possible causes:Washing machine module malfunctions

  • manufacturing defect;
  • poorly soldered contacts;
  • board damage;
  • voltage surge leading to burnout of individual sections of the board;
  • water ingress onto the control module;
  • switching off the machine by the user while it is running;
  • Improper transportation of the washing machine. Failure to secure the drawer and empty the water from it poses a risk of water spilling onto the control board;
  • The power supply wire may suddenly break and cause a voltage surge and burn out the board tracks.

DIY board repair

Board repair If you want to repair a Samsung washing machine yourself, start by disconnecting it from the appliance.

Remove the container, then unscrew the fasteners holding the retaining strips and remove the board. Disconnect the terminals, taking a photo of how and where they are connected beforehand to avoid mixing up the connectors later.

If you don't have experience using a multimeter or soldering station, it's best to call a qualified technician to repair the control unit. However, you can fix some problems yourself.Washing machine control module repair

  1. Control unit sensor failure. This occurs when the contacts in the adjustment knob become clogged or dirty. It's stiff when shifting, without producing the characteristic click. It needs to be removed and thoroughly cleaned.
  2. The sunroof lock sensor malfunctions due to soap residue build-up. The lock block needs to be cleaned.
  3. The control module may block the operation of the washing machine if there is no grounding. For grounding, it's best to use the electrical panel in the apartment building, connected to a three-wire cable. A dedicated outlet for the washing machine should be provided in the room.

If you don't have the skills to handle electronic equipment, call a technician or replace the entire control unit.

DIY Samsung washing machine bearing repair

The most stressed element in an electromechanical device is the bearings. A malfunction is detected by increased vibration of the washing machine or a grinding sound when the drum rotates.

  • To replace the bearings yourself, disconnect the power to the washing machine and turn off the water supply.
  • Then unscrew the screws and remove the top cover. Remove the cuvette by disconnecting the three hoses and loosening the clamps.Washing machine bearing repair
  • Remove the counterweight secured with bolts and brackets. It's very heavy.
  • Next, loosen the large clamp with a screwdriver and remove the rubber cuff.
  • Turn the machine on its side and unscrew the bottom.
  • Disconnect the cable wires from the pump and electric motor, having first photographed them for proper assembly.
  • Remove the shock absorbers.
  • Disconnect the water supply hoses and remove the hooks from the drum. This will remove the spring hangers. Remove the front panel: first the control unit, then the front panel with the drum. Remove the small counterweight so it's out of the way.

Now remove the drum housing, then the drive belt and wheel using an Allen key. Remove the shock absorbers by loosening the bolts.

Remove the clamps holding the two halves of the drum together, then the brackets. Remove the drum. You'll now see the bearing that needs to be replaced.

Using a wooden block and a hammer, tap the bearing out of its seat, take a new one, and insert it in its place. Reassemble the bearing.

    Hello, my Samsung washing machine isn't working. The screen shows 2H and only fills with water and starts. It doesn't stop filling. It doesn't heat up the water or spin. Thank you.

      2H is two hours (2 hour).
      Check how the hose is secured—it should be bent to create a water seal. In other words, it should be above the tank level. When the hose is lowered, the water doesn't have time to collect and flows down the drain.
