Is your washing machine tripping?

A minute ago, the washing machine was working normally, the laundry dancing rhythmically in the drum, and then suddenly the noise gave way to silence—the sensors went out, the washing machine stopped, and darkness reigned throughout the apartment. What happened?

What to do if the washing machine trips the fuses?

You've probably already figured it out—the circuit breakers in your apartment have tripped. And if you decided to resort to the internet, you likely couldn't turn on the lights yourself. Your suspicions for such antics naturally fell on the washing machine, as it consumes the most electricity.

But wait, don't jump to conclusions, it might not have anything to do with it at all in the case where:

  1.  Your device is new, “just from the store.” In this situation, the problem is most likely the electrical wiring or improperly selected electrical protection devices. For example, circuit breakers or RCDs may be insufficiently rated. To confirm that the problem is confined to the wiring, perhaps plug a kettle or iron into the outlet, as they have similar wattage. When the circuit breakers trip again, it's time to worry and call an electrician!
  2. It is possible that other high-power electrical appliances were turned on during washing. Let's imagine a typical Russian woman's weekend: the laundry is loaded, a festive dinner is cooking on the stove, a pie is baking in the oven, and the housewife is vacuuming the carpets. It's possible that the electrical system simply couldn't handle the load. This is especially true when the washing machine is in its active phase, i.e., heating water or wringing out laundryFor your own safety and the safety of your home, it's best to contact an electrician in this case. This is especially true if the network hasn't previously experienced any problems under this load.
  3. The washing machine plug or cord is short-circuited. If such damage is detected with the naked eye, the cord and plug must be replaced. This is best done by a professional.

The most common washing machine malfunctions that trigger the RCD (or circuit breaker)

Did the fuses blow when you turned it on?

When the circuit breakers trip, it's clear that something is shorting out. An extremely rare, but possible, occurrence is that the washing machine trips due to excessive condensation on the electrical components inside the machine.

In this situation, leaving the washing machine alone for a few days in a well-ventilated room is sufficient. However, keep in mind that the chances of this happening to you are very slim.

The most common unpleasant things that happen with washing machines are:

Malfunction What is the problem? Cost of repair services
Damage to the heating element At work washing machine heating element The heater is constantly exposed to water, detergents, and various particles from laundry. Over time, this leads to corrosion of its casing, allowing moisture to reach the heating coil inside the unit, resulting in heating element failure and short circuits.

A faulty tubular electric heater requires replacement.

From 1100 rubles
Control module failure

(control board)

High humidity can cause the contacts on the control module to oxidize. This can lead to a short circuit, and as a result, the washing machine will blow its fuses.

A broken board is subject to either repair, or if this is not possible, washing machine repair - replacement.

From 1600 rubles
Washing machine motor failure There are two possible causes of interturn short circuits in a washing machine motor: the first is a water leak inside the machine, and the second is natural physical wear and tear of the motor.

The damaged engine cannot be repaired,

it needs to be replaced.

The power button is broken What's the most commonly used part of a washing machine? The power button, of course: that's why its contacts tend to age faster than the others. Add to this the risk of oxidation, which means there's a good chance of short-circuiting the start button itself.

It is necessary to re-solder the contacts and/or replace the button.

Warning! Do not, under any circumstances, use a washing machine that trips fuses.

A short circuit can cause the washing machine to "break down" to the housing, putting you at significant risk of electric shock. This can be fatal! Furthermore, any damage to the wiring can cause a fire! Be extremely careful when handling electrical appliances and the electrical system: protect yourself and your home!
